Cordoba Municipality Implements Blockchain Technology
It has always been a noticing point, that Blockchain has always provided users with a wide variety of development opportunities. Cordoba which is a municipality in Argentina has decided to come forward and venture into the world of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLTs).
The current corruption index in the country is very high which is 39/100 (0 being most corrupt and 100 being the most transparent). Considering this it would be interesting to see how blockchain technology would prove under such circumstances.
In order to reduce corruption and improve the efficiency of bureaucratic affairs, the municipality of Cordoba has turned to the use of blockchain to store and guarantee the transparency of part of their records.
While talking about the skeptic nature of Argentinians when it comes to politics, it becomes very complex to improve the general perception of public management. Municipalities goal would be to achieve this with the help of blockchain technology.
The use of the blockchain will promote citizen participation in public policies. And the administration can easily keep a check on corruption.
According to Spanish-language media reviews, the project, which began in May of this year, seeks to use blockchain as an alternative archive to safeguard information in a secure and inviolable manner.
Andrés Vázquez, Director of Information Systems of the Secretariat of Modernization of the Municipality of Cordoba said,
“After having done a great deal of work on government transparency, we believe that the municipality should take care of the security and continuity of the published data. An issue that is not on the agenda of most of the country’s municipalities, but given the degree of progress we have in the publication of data, our municipality is in a position to think about these challenges.”
Blockchains of Bitcoin and Ethereum were chosen by the Municipality, as they are the most popular, secure, stable, and with the most significant number of developers.
Currently, the mentioned blockchain would contain information of the budgets of the years 2017 and 2018, the Trust Fund for the Sanitation of the Sanitary and Sewerage Infrastructure (2013-2016), the Urban Planning Repair Fund 2016 and the sworn statement of Mayor Ramon Javier Mestre for the current year.
There is an online tutorial placed by the government of Cordoba to verify the source of the publications uploaded onto the blockchain. This is to confirm the hash of the document matches that in the blockchain.
There is another similar initiative of the Official Bulletin of the Argentine Republic to guarantee its integrity over time its backed up by a blockchain.
